# Use slow-motion video

Get the most from slow motion in Onform: record at 120 or 240 fps, play videos back slowly, and import Slo-mo videos from your iPhone camera without losing their frame rate, so golf 3D still works.

Works on: iPhone, iPad and Android. Importing iPhone Slo-mo videos and golf 3D are for iPhone and iPad.

Any video in Onform plays back slowly, but how smooth the slow motion looks depends on the frame rate it was filmed at (fps, frames per second). A clip filmed at 240 fps has eight times as many frames as one at 30 fps, so a bat through the zone, a racket at contact or a sprinter's foot strike stays sharp frame by frame.

## Record in slow motion

The easiest way is to record in Onform at a high frame rate:

1. Open the camera from a Library.
2. Tap the button at the top that shows the resolution and frame rate, for example **1080p, 60 fps**.
3. Choose **120 fps** or **240 fps** if your device offers them.

High frame rates need good light, make larger files and have shorter maximum lengths (2 minutes at 120 fps, 1 minute at 240 fps). For all the camera options, see [Record video in Onform](https://github.com/Onform-Inc/onform-docs/tree/main/get-started/how-onform-works/recording-modes.md).

## Play a video in slow motion

On iPhone and iPad, open the video and tap the speed button at the bottom (it shows 1×). Choose 1/2, 1/4 or 1/8 speed to slow it down, or 1.5× or 2× to speed it up. You can also step through frame by frame.

## Import a Slo-mo video from your iPhone camera

When you film in **Slo-mo** with the iPhone's own Camera app, the Photos app saves it so that it plays slowly. If you import it like that, the video loses its high frame rate in Onform: it plays at normal speed and golf 3D can't be made from it. Turn off the slow section first, and Onform keeps all the frames.

1. Open the video in the **Photos** app and tap **Edit**.
2. Under the video, drag the two marks on the speed bar together, so no part of the video is set to play slowly.
3. Tap **Done**.
4. Import the video into Onform: in a Library, tap **Import** and choose **Camera Roll**, or share it to Onform from Photos.

Onform shows it at its full frame rate, and you choose how slowly to play it.

{% hint style="info" %}
Videos sent through messaging apps, email or some editing apps are often compressed, which can drop them below 120 fps. For the best results, record in Onform, or import the original file from your camera.
{% endhint %}

## Use slow-motion video for golf 3D

Golf 3D needs a full swing filmed at **120 fps or higher**, from face-on, with the golfer's whole body in frame, and a video shorter than 15 seconds. If a video doesn't qualify, Onform tells you why when you try. Trim long videos to just the swing first. See [Analyze a swing in 3D](https://github.com/Onform-Inc/onform-docs/tree/main/sports/golf/golf-analysis/using-3d-data-and-visualization.md).

## If something goes wrong

| What you see | What to do |
| ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| An imported Slo-mo video plays at normal speed, or 3D says the frame rate is too low | Follow the steps above to turn off the slow section in Photos, then import it again. |
| 120 or 240 fps isn't in the list | Your device doesn't offer it with that lens or camera. Try the other lens, or switch between front and back camera and look again. |
| High frame rate videos look dark or grainy | Add light, or record outdoors. Higher frame rates need more light. |

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.onform.com/coaching/record-and-import/how-to-import-slowmo-video-for-use-with-3d.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
