# Free up storage space

Onform taking up too much space on your phone or tablet? Clear the video cache and keep files for less time. Your videos stay safe in the cloud.

Works on: iPhone, iPad and Android. The web app doesn't store videos on your computer.

Onform keeps copies of your recent videos on your phone or tablet so they open quickly, even offline. Every video you've uploaded is also stored in the Onform cloud. So when your device is running low on space, you can safely remove the copies on your device: the videos stay in your Library and download again when you open them.

## What's safe to clear

* **Safe:** videos that have finished uploading. Clearing the cache only removes the copy on this device. The thumbnail then shows a cloud icon, and the video downloads when you tap it (you need a connection for that).
* **Not safe:** videos still waiting to upload. They're only on this device until they upload. Clearing the cache leaves them alone, but deleting the app doesn't. See [Why are my uploads stuck?](/help/troubleshooting/why-are-my-uploads-stuck.md)

## 1. Clear the video cache

{% tabs %}
{% tab title="iPhone and iPad" %}

1. On the Home screen, tap your profile icon, then the settings icon (the gear at the top).
2. Tap **Local Cache Settings**.
3. Tap **Clear video cache**.
4. Choose what to clear:
   * **Clear all except reference & starred** keeps your starred videos and your **Reference Content** folder on the device, so they still play offline.
   * **Clear all including reference & starred** frees the most space.
     {% endtab %}

{% tab title="Android" %}

1. On the Home screen, tap your profile icon, then **Local Cache Settings**.
2. Tap **Clear Cache**, then **Clear**.
   {% endtab %}
   {% endtabs %}

## 2. Keep files on your device for less time

Onform clears the copy on your device automatically once a video is older than the time you choose. A shorter time means less storage used, but more videos to download when you open them.

{% tabs %}
{% tab title="iPhone and iPad" %}

1. On the Home screen, tap your profile icon, then the settings icon.
2. Tap **Local Cache Settings**.
3. Under **Automatic management**, choose a shorter time, such as **Keep files for 24 hours** or **Keep files for 3 days**. The standard setting is **Keep files for 2 weeks**.

Starred videos and the **Reference Content** folder are never cleared automatically.
{% endtab %}

{% tab title="Android" %}

1. On the Home screen, tap your profile icon, then **Local Cache Settings**.
2. Under **AUTOMATIC MANAGEMENT**, choose a shorter time, such as **Keep files for 24 hours**.
   {% endtab %}
   {% endtabs %}

## 3. Keep only the videos you need offline

Videos you've starred (iPhone and iPad) or made available offline (Android) stay on your device. If you've kept lots of them, they add up.

* **iPhone and iPad:** touch and hold a video's thumbnail and tap **Remove From Cache** to clear just that one. Unstar videos you no longer need offline.
* **Android:** only use **Make Available Offline** for the videos you'll need without a connection.

To keep the videos you need before you head somewhere without signal, see [Use Onform without a connection](https://github.com/Onform-Inc/onform-docs/tree/main/get-started/how-onform-works/working-offline-with-onform.md).

## 4. Empty Recently Deleted (iPhone and iPad)

Videos you delete go to **Recently Deleted** for 30 days, and can still use space on your device.

1. In **Library - All Files**, tap the name at the top (it has a small down arrow), then tap **Recently Deleted**.
2. Permanently delete the videos you don't need.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Permanently deleted videos can't be restored.
{% endhint %}

## Space didn't go down?

Your device can take a while to update its storage figure. Close Onform and restart your phone or tablet, then check again in your device's storage settings.

If Onform still uses a lot of space, deleting and reinstalling the app clears everything on the device. Only do this when no videos are waiting to upload (on iPhone and iPad, **Library - All Files** shows no **pending upload** count). Then sign back in with the same method as before: your videos are still in the cloud.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.onform.com/help/troubleshooting/how-to-manage-storage-space.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
