# Record video in Onform

Record video in the Onform camera on iPhone, iPad and Android: open the camera, pick the frame rate and lens, and choose a recording mode such as Manual, One-Tap, Auto-Detect or Multi-Cam.

Works on: iPhone, iPad and Android. You can't record in the web app: upload a video with **Upload Files** instead. Recording modes, Multi-Cam and the other extras below are on iPhone and iPad only.

Record straight into Onform and your video lands in the Library you're in, ready to slow down, draw on, compare and send. This page shows how to open the camera, choose the frame rate, and pick the recording mode that suits your session.

## Open the camera

{% tabs %}
{% tab title="iPhone and iPad" %}

1. On the Home screen, tap **Library - All Files**, or open an athlete's or team's workspace and tap **Library**.
2. Tap the record button. The camera opens.
3. Tap the record button again to start, and once more to stop.

In a chat, tap the video camera icon to record a clip and send it there.
{% endtab %}

{% tab title="Android and web" %}

1. On the Home screen, tap **Library - All Files**, or open a workspace's **Library**.
2. Tap the red record button. The camera opens.
3. Tap the record button to start, and again to stop. While recording, you can tap **Pause** and **Resume**.

The Android camera has one way of recording, with a front/back camera switch, a microphone button and a choice of resolution and frame rate. Recording modes, Auto-Detect, Multi-Cam, radar and launch monitors aren't in the Android app.

You can't record in the web app. In a Library, tap **Upload Files** to add a video from your computer.
{% endtab %}
{% endtabs %}

The first time you open the camera, allow Onform to use the camera and microphone.

## Choose the frame rate and lens

The button at the top of the camera shows what you're recording at, for example **1080p, 60 fps**. Tap it to change the resolution and frame rate. On iPhone and iPad, the same list also lets you switch lens (**Standard Camera**, **Ultra-Wide Camera** or **Telephoto Camera**) if your device has it. To use the front camera, tap the switch-camera button.

On iPad and iPhone you can also record with a USB camera plugged into the USB-C port, on plans that include it. See [Record with a USB camera](https://github.com/Onform-Inc/onform-docs/tree/main/sports/hardware/radars-and-other-devices/use-a-usb-camera.md).

A higher frame rate (fps, frames per second) gives smoother slow motion and sharper frames of fast movement, like a bat through the zone or a sprinter's foot strike. It also needs more light and makes bigger files that take longer to upload. The choices depend on your phone or tablet.

| Frame rate | Good for | Longest recording |
| ---------- | ----------------------------------------------- | ----------------- |
| 30 fps | Long drills, whole practices, talking to camera | 15 minutes |
| 60 fps     | Most technique work                             | 10 minutes        |
| 120 fps    | Fast movements, slow-motion review, golf 3D     | 2 minutes         |
| 240 fps    | Very fast movements in good light               | 1 minute          |

The list shows the maximum length for each choice. Need longer? On iPhone and iPad, a plan that includes 60-minute recording lets you turn on **Set Max Recording Limit To 60 Mins**: on the Home screen, tap your profile icon, then the settings icon, and look under **Camera Settings**. Multi-Cam recordings are limited to 20 seconds.

{% hint style="info" %}
Want golf 3D? Record the swing at 120 fps or higher. See [Use slow-motion video](https://github.com/Onform-Inc/onform-docs/tree/main/coaching/record-and-import/how-to-import-slowmo-video-for-use-with-3d.md).
{% endhint %}

## Pick a recording mode (iPhone and iPad)

Tap the mode name at the top of the camera (it shows the current mode, for example **Manual**) and choose a mode. Modes with options have a settings menu next to them, such as **One-Tap Settings**. The modes you see depend on your sport, your device and your plan.

| Mode | What it does | Who sees it |
| ------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Manual** | Tap to start, tap to stop, like your phone's camera. | Everyone |
| **One-Tap** | Tap the moment the rep happens and Onform keeps the seconds before and after. No more long clips of waiting around. | Everyone |
| **Auto-Detect** | Watches your athlete, records each swing or pitch on its own, and clips it for you. Hands-free. | Golf, baseball and softball, on newer iPhones and iPads, with a plan that includes it |
| **Launch-Monitor** | Records each shot and adds the ball and club numbers from your launch monitor. | Golf |
| **Sport-Radar** | A radar reading starts the recording and adds the speed to the video. | Baseball, softball, cricket, tennis, hockey, lacrosse, soccer, football and volleyball |
| **Auxiliary-Cam** | Turns this device into an extra camera for Multi-Cam. | Everyone, on iPhone and iPad |

### One-Tap

One-Tap is ideal when you don't know exactly when the rep will happen: a hitter between pitches, a high jumper on the approach, a golfer settling over the ball.

1. Choose **One-Tap**.
2. Point the camera at your athlete. Onform is already watching.
3. Tap the record button right as the action happens, for example at contact.

Your video includes the seconds before your tap plus the seconds after it. To change those, open **One-Tap Settings** and set how long to keep before the tap (up to 15 seconds) and after it (up to 60 seconds). Turn on **Enable Auto-Playback** to watch each clip straight away.

### Auto-Detect

Auto-Detect records each full golf swing, baseball or softball swing, or pitch on its own, so you can coach without touching the device. Each rep becomes its own video.

1. Choose **Auto-Detect**.
2. Set the camera up so your athlete's whole body is in frame for the whole rep.
3. Keep other people out of the shot, and leave a few seconds between reps.

For golf, **Auto-Detect Settings** has extra options:

* **Practice Swing Detection**: turn on **Avoid Capturing Practice Swings** so only real shots are kept. If it's greyed out, tap your profile icon on the Home screen, then the settings icon, and tap **Fetch Latest AI Models**.
* **Don't Ask 'How did it go?'**: by default Onform asks after each swing and adds what you say to the video's title. Say "discard" to throw that swing away.
* **Don't Capture When Viewing Video**: stops Auto-Detect recording while you watch the last swing.
* **Enable Auto-Playback** and **Adjust Post Capture Duration** (how many seconds after the swing to keep, 1 to 5).

Auto-Detect is for full swings. It may not pick up chips, putts, or swings that are very slow or stop partway.

### Launch-Monitor and Sport-Radar

Golf coaches can connect a Full Swing KIT, Garmin R50 or Garmin R10 under **Launch-Monitor**. For other ball sports, **Sport-Radar** works with Pocket Radar and Stalker Radar, if your plan includes them. See the setup guides under Related.

### Auxiliary-Cam and Multi-Cam

Use two to four iPhones and iPads to film the same rep from different angles at once. See [Record from several angles with Multi-Cam](https://github.com/Onform-Inc/onform-docs/tree/main/coaching/record-and-import/how-to-use-the-multi-cam-feature-to-record-multiple-camera-angles-simultaneously.md).

## Start and stop without touching the screen (iPhone and iPad)

* **Your voice:** say "start recording", "stop recording", "pause recording", "resume recording" or "discard recording". The first time, tap the prompt in the camera to turn on speech recognition, or turn it on in Onform's settings. Microphone access must be on for Onform in your iPhone or iPad **Settings**.
* **A Bluetooth remote:** many camera shutter remotes work. Press once to start and again to stop; press twice quickly to pause. Not every remote works with Onform, even if it works with your phone's camera.
* **Your Apple Watch:** the Onform watch app starts and stops recording on your iPhone and lets you change the mode.

## More camera tools (iPhone and iPad)

* **Exposure:** tap the exposure button to set the shutter speed. Move the shutter speed slider right to reduce motion blur, and the ISO slider right to brighten the picture.
* **Draw before you record:** tap the pencil to draw setup or alignment lines on the live picture. See [Draw on the camera before you record](https://github.com/Onform-Inc/onform-docs/tree/main/coaching/record-and-import/live-drawing-helps-analyze-setup-form-before-recording.md).
* **More options (...):** turn sound recording on or off with **Enable Audio Capture** or **Mute Audio Capture**, and turn skeleton tracking on or off.

## If something goes wrong

| What you see | What to do |
| ------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| No **Auto-Detect** in the mode list | Auto-Detect is for golf, baseball and softball and needs a newer iPhone or iPad. Check the sport on your profile. |
| An upgrade message when you choose a mode or tool | Your plan doesn't include it. See [onform.com/pricing](https://onform.com/pricing/). |
| Recording stopped on its own | You reached the longest recording for that frame rate. Pick a lower frame rate for long sessions. |
| The frame rate you want isn't in the list | Your device doesn't offer it with that lens. Try another lens, or switch between front and back camera and look again. |
| Voice commands don't work | Turn on speech recognition in Onform's settings, and allow microphone access for Onform in your device **Settings**. |
| The Bluetooth remote doesn't start recording | Turn the volume down a little (the remote works like pressing volume up, which does nothing at full volume), and stop AirPlay or screen mirroring, which can drop the Bluetooth connection. |

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.onform.com/how-onform-works/recording-modes.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
