# What video file types are supported?

Which video, photo and document files you can import into Onform on iPhone, iPad, Android and the web, how big they can be, and what happens to slow-motion and high frame rate videos.

Works on: iPhone, iPad, Android and web.

**MP4 and MOV videos work everywhere in Onform.** If a video won't import or won't play, convert it to MP4 and import it again. Here's the detail for each app.

## Videos

| File type                                              | iPhone and iPad                                                                                                      | Android                                                                                           | Web                                       |
| ------------------------------------------------------ | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------- |
| Videos in your photos (**Camera Roll** or **Gallery**) | Yes, any video your iPhone or iPad can play, including slow-motion videos and videos kept in iCloud | MP4 and MOV work best | No **Gallery** on the web. Use **Files**. |
| MP4 and MOV                                            | Yes                                                                                                                  | Yes                                                                                               | Yes                                       |
| M4V | Import it from **Camera Roll**, or convert it to MP4. From **Files**, it comes in as a document rather than a video. | Yes, with **Files** | Yes |
| AVI, MKV, WMV, FLV | Not supported. Convert to MP4. | Onform accepts them as videos, but they may not play on other devices. Convert to MP4 to be safe. | Same as Android |
| WEBM, 3GP | Not supported. Convert to MP4. | They come in as documents rather than videos. Convert to MP4. | Same as Android |

On iPhone and iPad, Onform converts MOV videos to MP4 as it uploads them, so they play on Android and the web too. Videos imported on Android or the web upload as they are. If you or your athletes will watch on the web or on a Windows computer, MP4 is the safest choice.

## Photos and documents

| File type                               | iPhone and iPad                                                                            | Android                                                    | Web                     |
| --------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | ---------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------- |
| Photos | Any photo in your **Camera Roll**, including HEIC. From **Files**: JPG, PNG, GIF and TIFF. | JPG, PNG, GIF and BMP. HEIC and WEBP come in as documents. | JPG, PNG, GIF and BMP |
| PDFs                                    | Yes                                                                                        | Yes                                                        | Yes                     |
| Other documents (Word, Excel and so on) | You can import them, but they may not open for everyone. Save them as PDFs first. | Same as iPhone and iPad | Same as iPhone and iPad |

You can draw on and compare photos just like videos. PDFs are handy for drill sheets, practice plans or a training program you want to give lots of athletes.

## File size and length

* **Web:** each file can be up to 1 GB. If you pick a bigger file, Onform offers to skip it and upload the rest.
* **iPhone, iPad and Android:** there's no set size or length limit, but long, high-resolution videos take longer to import and upload, and need free space on your device while they do. Trim long recordings down to the part you want to work on.
* How many videos you can keep depends on your plan. See [onform.com/pricing](https://onform.com/pricing/).

## Slow-motion and high frame rate videos

* Onform keeps the frame rate of the video you import. A video filmed at 120 or 240 frames per second gives you smooth slow motion and sharp frame-by-frame steps.
* Videos sent through a messaging app or by email, or saved out of another app, are often compressed on the way and can lose frames. Import the original file from the device or camera that filmed it.
* 3D needs a video filmed at 120 frames per second or more. For 3D, record in Onform where you can.
* A slow-motion video from the iPhone Camera app may not work with 3D as it is. See [How to import slow-motion video for use with 3D on iOS](https://github.com/Onform-Inc/onform-docs/tree/main/coaching/record-and-import/how-to-import-slowmo-video-for-use-with-3d.md).

## If something goes wrong

| What you see | What to do |
| ------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| "Unable to import the selected file" | Check the file type above. Convert the video to MP4 with a free converter app or website, then import it again. |
| A video comes in as a document, not a video | Onform didn't recognize the file type. Convert it to MP4 and import it again. On iPhone and iPad, you can also save it to your photos and import it from **Camera Roll**. |
| A video imports but won't play | Convert it to MP4 and import it again. If it still won't play, email <support@onform.com> with the file type, where it came from and your device. |
| A document won't open | Save it as a PDF and import it again. |

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.onform.com/how-onform-works/what-video-file-types-are-supported.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
