# Switch from coach to athlete (or athlete to coach)

Change your role between coach, athlete and parent in your profile, and why your role decides whether you need a coach plan.

Works on: iPhone, iPad, Android and web.

Your role tells Onform whether you coach, train or follow along as a parent. You choose it when you sign up, and you can change it yourself at any time in your profile. You don't need to sign out or reinstall the app.

## Before you start

* **Your role decides what you pay.** Athletes and parents invited by a coach use Onform free. Coach roles need a coach plan or a coaching seat. See [Why your role matters](#why-your-role-matters) below.
* **Your videos and workspaces stay put** when you change your role.

## Change your role

{% tabs %}
{% tab title="iPhone and iPad" %}

1. On the Home screen, tap your profile icon.
2. Tap **Edit Profile**. Coaches see **Edit Your Profile & Lesson Booking Links** instead.
3. Tap **Your Role** and choose a role.
4. Tap **Done**.

To use a role name of your own, such as Analyst or Strength Coach, choose the last option in the list, type the name and tap **Save**.
{% endtab %}

{% tab title="Android and web" %}

1. On the Home screen, tap your profile icon.
2. Tap **Edit Profile**.
3. Tap **Select Role** and choose a role. If Onform asks you to pick a sport first, choose it under **Select Sport**.
4. Tap **Update**.

To use a role name of your own, choose **Other** and type the name.
{% endtab %}
{% endtabs %}

The role names follow your sport. For example, the athlete role may read Golfer or Swimmer.

| Choose                                                      | If you                                                              |
| ----------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| The athlete role (your sport's word for it), or **Student** | Train, with a coach or on your own |
| **Parent**                                                  | Follow your child's lessons                                         |
| **Coach** or **Assistant Coach** | Coach athletes |
| Your own role name (**Other**) | Work on a coaching staff in another role, such as analyst or physio |

## What your coach or admin sets for you

Your role also shows next to your name in each workspace you're in, and the person who runs that workspace sets it there.

* **In a workspace:** your coach can change your role. They touch and hold your name in the workspace (or open the menu next to it on Android and web), choose **Edit** *your name*'**s Details**, and change the role. See [Invite your athletes](https://github.com/Onform-Inc/onform-docs/tree/main/coaching/organize-your-athletes/invite-your-athletes.md).
* **In an organization:** an admin sets each staff member's role in **Manage Staff**. See [Staff, seats and roles](https://github.com/Onform-Inc/onform-docs/tree/main/programs/staff-seats-and-access/staff-seats-and-roles.md).

If you're an athlete and you're asked to pay, check both: your own profile and your role in your coach's workspace should both be the athlete role.

## Why your role matters

* **Athlete, Student and Parent roles are free** when a coach invites you. You can record, import and send videos, and use the analysis tools. You can record up to 5 Voice-overs in any 30 days, and you can't invite athletes of your own.
* **Coach, Assistant Coach and your own role names are coach roles.** They need a coach plan, or a coaching seat from your organization. Without one, you'll see upgrade messages.
* **The plans you're offered follow your role.** Coach roles see coach plans. To buy an individual plan for yourself, change your role to the athlete role first. If the plans don't change straight away, wait a minute and look again.
* **Someone who only films or uploads,** like a parent or a helper at practice, should use the athlete or Parent role, not a coach role.

Changing your role doesn't cancel a plan you already pay for. If you're moving from a coach plan to an individual plan, or the other way round, cancel the old plan too. See [Cancel your subscription](https://github.com/Onform-Inc/onform-docs/tree/main/account/cancel-or-change/cancel-your-subscription.md) and [Subscribe or change your plan](https://github.com/Onform-Inc/onform-docs/tree/main/account/plans-and-payments/subscribe-or-change-your-plan.md).

## If something goes wrong

| What you see | What to do |
| ------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| You're an athlete and Onform asks you to upgrade | Check your role is the athlete role in your profile, and ask your coach to check it in their workspace. See [Why am I asked to pay?](https://github.com/Onform-Inc/onform-docs/tree/main/athletes/join-your-coach/why-am-i-asked-to-pay.md) |
| You don't see individual plans | Your role is probably a coach role. Change it to the athlete role, wait a minute, then open the plans again. |
| You don't see coach plans | Your role is probably the athlete or Parent role. Change it to **Coach**, then open the plans again. |
| You coach in an organization and can't change your staff role | Ask your organization's admin. They change it in **Manage Staff**. |

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.onform.com/set-up/how-do-i-switch-from-coach-to-athlete-or-athlete-to-coach.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
