# 3D questions and problems

Fix golf 3D problems: no 3D option, the AI models message, 3D couldn't be generated, stuck generating, missing metrics or results that look wrong.

Works on: iPhone and iPad, for golf.

Most 3D problems come down to four things: the plan, the AI models on the device, how the swing was filmed, or the device itself. Start with the section that matches what you see. For how 3D works, see [Analyze a swing in 3D](/sports/golf-analysis/using-3d-data-and-visualization.md).

## 1. There's no AI tools button or 3D option

The **AI tools** button (the sparkles icon) only appears when 3D can work:

* **The workspace is set to golf.** 3D is for golf only for now. If your workspace is set to another sport, 3D doesn't appear.
* **It's a video.** Photos, PDFs and Voice-overs don't have 3D.
* **You're on iPhone or iPad.** The Android and web apps don't have 3D.
* **Your app is up to date.** Update Onform from the App Store.

## 2. "3D is locked" or you're asked to upgrade

3D, body metrics and the kinematic sequence are part of Coach Pro and Individual Premium. If you see **3D is locked** or **Kinematic Sequence is locked**, your plan doesn't include them. See [onform.com/pricing](https://onform.com/pricing/) or [Subscribe or change your plan](https://github.com/Onform-Inc/onform-docs/tree/main/account/plans-and-payments/subscribe-or-change-your-plan.md).

**Just upgraded and still locked?**

1. Update Onform on every iPhone and iPad you use.
2. On each device, go to the Home screen, tap your profile icon, then the settings icon, and tap **Fetch Latest AI Models**.
3. Close the video and open it again.

**You're a golfer working with a coach?** Your coach's plan decides what you see in their workspace. A coach on Coach Pro can turn on **Allow Your Golfer To View 3D Swing Metrics** in your details. For 3D on your own swings outside your coach's workspace, you need Individual Premium. See [Who pays for Onform?](https://github.com/Onform-Inc/onform-docs/tree/main/account/plans-and-payments/who-pays-for-onform.md)

## 3. "3D generation requires Onform's AI models"

3D needs Onform's AI models on your device. They usually download by themselves, but a new device, a reinstall or an update can need a fresh copy.

1. Go to the Home screen, tap your profile icon, then the settings icon.
2. Scroll to **AI Models** and tap **Fetch Latest AI Models**.
3. When it says **Fetch successful**, open the video again.

See [Turn on 3D and download the AI models](https://github.com/Onform-Inc/onform-docs/tree/main/get-started/set-up/how-to-enable-3d-processing-and-download-the-latest-ai-models.md) if the download fails.

## 4. "3D couldn't be generated"

Onform checks each video and tells you what's wrong. Match the message:

| The message says | What to do |
| ------------------------------------------------------------ | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| The video is too low a frame rate, or needs at least 120 FPS | Record again at 120 or 240 fps. An imported iPhone Slo-mo video can lose its frame rate: see [Use slow-motion video](https://github.com/Onform-Inc/onform-docs/tree/main/coaching/record-and-import/how-to-import-slowmo-video-for-use-with-3d.md). |
| The swing needs to be less than 15 seconds | Tap **...**, trim the video to just the swing, then try again. |
| The golfer couldn't be detected clearly | Film so the golfer's whole body is in the picture from the start, fairly large, with no one close by in the background. |
| The swing needs to be from face-on or down-the-line | Film from face-on or down-the-line. Swings filmed from behind or overhead don't work. |
| A complete golf swing couldn't be identified | Capture the whole full swing, from address to finish. Practice swings, partial swings, chips and putts don't work. |
| The video couldn't be read | Wait until the video has fully downloaded, then open it again. If it still fails, record the swing again. |
| Re-open the video to try again | Close the video, open it again. If it keeps happening, email us (see below). |

Tap **View Recording Guidelines** under the message for tips on filming, or **Have Feedback?** to tell us what happened.

## 5. It's stuck on "Generating 3D" or very slow

3D is worked out on your device, so it's quicker on newer devices. It usually takes from a few seconds to about a minute.

1. Give it a minute, and keep Onform open on the video.
2. If nothing moves, open **AI tools** and tap **Stop Generating**, close the video and open it again.
3. Still stuck? Close Onform completely, open it again, and retry. See [How do I completely close my app?](https://github.com/Onform-Inc/onform-docs/tree/main/help/troubleshooting/how-do-i-completely-close-my-app.md)
4. Check the video is short (under 15 seconds) and has finished downloading.

If you see "Please note 3D generation is likely to be slow on your device", your iPhone or iPad is an older one. 3D, the kinematic sequence and club tracking still work on it, but they may be slow to create. Newer-generation iPhones and iPads are much faster.

## 6. 3D starts every time I open a video

One of your panels is set to **3D**, and Onform remembers your layout. Tap the button at the left of that panel and choose a camera (**1** or **CAM 1**), or tap **Layout** and choose **1-Panel View**. You can still make 3D any time from **AI tools**.

## 7. The 3D works but the metrics or kinematic sequence are missing

* **The swing was filmed down-the-line.** You get the 3D model, but body metrics, slide and sway and the kinematic sequence need a face-on swing. You'll see "The Kinematic Sequence is available for face-on swings only."
* **The metrics are hidden.** Tap **Layout** and choose **Show Metrics**. If it says no metrics are selected, tap **Layout**, then **Edit Metrics**, and tick the ones you want.
* **"The Kinematic Sequence needs 3D metrics, which aren't enabled for athletes in this workspace."** Ask your coach to turn on **Allow Your Golfer To View 3D Swing Metrics** in your details.
* **The club line is missing from the kinematic sequence.** The club head has to stay in the picture for the whole swing.

## 8. The results look wrong

3D is an estimate from a single video, so filming makes a big difference. Check that:

* The golfer's whole body is in the picture and fairly large, with no one close by.
* The camera was square to the golfer at about hip height, and held still.
* The light was good and the video isn't blurry.
* You set the golfer's **Height** in **Layout** > **Edit Metrics**, so sway, thrust and lift are scaled right.
* The club head stayed in the picture. If it leaves the frame, the club path and the club line in the kinematic sequence can go wrong.

The swing position markers (address, top, impact and the others) are found automatically and can be a frame or two off.

If a video's 3D still looks wrong after updating the app and fetching the AI models, tap **...** and choose **Regenerate 3D**. This replaces the 3D for that video, including the copy others in the workspace see. If you see "The 3D data for this video couldn't be loaded on this device", **Regenerate 3D** fixes that too.

## Questions

**Which devices does 3D work on?** iPhone and iPad with iOS or iPadOS 18 or later. 3D, the kinematic sequence and club tracking run on the device and need newer-generation Apple hardware to be quick. On older devices they still work, but they may be slow to create. There's no 3D in the Android or web app, and no way to view 3D on Windows.

**Can I use it on a Mac?** The Onform app on a Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or newer) can make 3D. Macs with an Intel chip can't.

**Do I need the internet?** Only to download the AI models. After that, 3D works offline. Onform shares the finished 3D with your workspace when you're back online.

**Does it work for putting and chipping?** Not yet. 3D is built for full swings.

**Does it work for left-handed golfers?** Yes. Onform works out which way the golfer is facing.

**Can I use more than one camera?** Yes. With Multi-Cam, Onform makes 3D for each angle and uses the face-on camera for the body metrics. See [Record from several angles with Multi-Cam](https://github.com/Onform-Inc/onform-docs/tree/main/coaching/record-and-import/how-to-use-the-multi-cam-feature-to-record-multiple-camera-angles-simultaneously.md).

**Is 3D coming to other sports?** It's golf only for now. We'd like to add more sports, but there's no date yet.

**How accurate is it?** See [About Onform's 3D model](/sports/golf-analysis/model-card.md).

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.onform.com/sports/golf-analysis/3d-faqs.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
