# Analyze a swing in 3D

Turn a golf swing video into a 3D model on iPhone or iPad: film a swing that works, make the 3D and read the body metrics, kinematic sequence and swing plane.

Works on: iPhone and iPad, for golf. 3D isn't in the Android or web app.

Onform builds a 3D model of a golf swing from an ordinary video, right on your iPhone or iPad. You can turn the model to see the swing from any side, read body data such as turn, sway and lift at every frame, and draw the club path, hand path and swing plane on the video. You don't need extra cameras or sensors, or an internet connection once the AI models are on your device.

## Before you start

* **A golf workspace.** 3D appears for videos in workspaces set to golf.
* **A plan with 3D.** 3D is part of Coach Pro and Individual Premium, and a Coach Pro coach can let their golfers see it (see [Share 3D with your golfer](#share-3d-with-your-golfer)). See [onform.com/pricing](https://onform.com/pricing/).
* **The AI models on your device.** Onform usually downloads them for you. On a new device, or if Onform asks, see [Turn on 3D and download the AI models](https://github.com/Onform-Inc/onform-docs/tree/main/get-started/set-up/how-to-enable-3d-processing-and-download-the-latest-ai-models.md).
* **A newer-generation iPhone or iPad works best.** 3D, the kinematic sequence and club tracking are worked out on the device itself. On an older iPhone or iPad they still work, but they may be slow to create, and Onform warns you when that's likely.

## Film a swing that works for 3D

How you film matters more than anything else. Onform checks each video and tells you what to change if it can't make the 3D.

1. **Record at 120 fps or higher.** In the Onform camera, tap the button at the top that shows the resolution and frame rate, and choose **120 fps** or **240 fps**.
2. **Film face-on or down-the-line.** Both make a 3D model. The body metrics, slide and sway and kinematic sequence come from **face-on** swings only, and the swing plane needs a **down-the-line** swing. Filmed from behind or overhead, 3D won't work.
3. **Keep the whole golfer in the picture** from address to finish, and fairly large: at least half the height of the picture.
4. **Set the camera at about hip height, square to the golfer.** A tripod helps but isn't required. Use the same spot each time so swings compare fairly.
5. **Film one golfer.** If other people are in the background, keep them far away so your golfer is clearly the biggest person in the picture.
6. **Use good light.** Higher frame rates need more light.
7. **Take a full swing.** 3D is built for full swings. Practice swings, partial swings, chips and putts don't work.
8. **Keep it under 15 seconds.** If it's longer, tap **...** and trim the video to just the swing. Swings recorded with **Auto-Detect** are clipped for you.

Recording in Onform gives the best results. You can import a video too, as long as it keeps its high frame rate: videos sent through messaging apps or email often lose it. See [Use slow-motion video](https://github.com/Onform-Inc/onform-docs/tree/main/coaching/record-and-import/how-to-import-slowmo-video-for-use-with-3d.md).

Filming with **Multi-Cam**? Onform makes 3D for each angle, takes the body metrics from the face-on camera and adds what the down-the-line camera sees. See [Record from several angles with Multi-Cam](https://github.com/Onform-Inc/onform-docs/tree/main/coaching/record-and-import/how-to-use-the-multi-cam-feature-to-record-multiple-camera-angles-simultaneously.md).

## Make the 3D

1. Open the video.
2. Tap the **AI tools** button (the sparkles icon) at the top of the screen.
3. Tap **Show 3D**. Or tap any other tool in the list, such as **Show Hand Path**: Onform makes the 3D first, then shows that tool.
4. Wait while the title shows **Generating 3D** and how far along it is. It takes from a few seconds to about a minute, depending on your device and the video.

Changed your mind? Open **AI tools** again and tap **Stop Generating**, or tap **Cancel 3D Generation** in the 3D panel.

You can also set a panel to show 3D: tap the small button at the left of a panel (it shows **1** or **CAM 1**) and choose **3D**. Onform remembers this, so it then makes 3D for every golf video you open. To stop that, switch the panel back to the camera, or tap **Layout** and choose **1-Panel View**.

Onform saves the 3D with the video, so it's ready next time, on your other devices, and for others in the workspace who have 3D.

## What you see

### The 3D model

The 3D panel plays in step with the video.

* Drag to turn the model, and pinch to zoom.
* Tap the figure button under the panel's **3D** button to choose a view: **Set to Down the Line**, **Set to Face On** or **Set to Overhead**.
* In the same menu, **Customize Display** lets you show a **Skeleton** or an **Avatar**, turn on **Show Background**, and add **Joint Lines** across the **Shoulders**, **Pelvis** or **Knees**.
* You can draw on the 3D panel too. The angle and timer tools don't work in 3D.

To choose how many panels you see, tap **Layout** and pick a view, from **1-Panel View** up to **4-Panel View** on iPad (iPhone shows up to two). Each panel can show a camera angle, **3D**, the **Kinematic Sequence** or, if you recorded with a pressure mat, **Pressure**.

### Body metrics

For face-on swings, the body metrics appear with the video and change frame by frame. See [Body metrics glossary](#body-metrics-glossary) for what each one means.

* **Choose and order metrics:** tap **Layout**, then **Edit Metrics**. Tick the ones you want, then hold and drag them to change the order.
* **Hide them:** tap **Layout**, then **Hide Metrics**.
* **Get accurate distances:** sway, thrust and lift are scaled to the golfer's height. In **Edit Metrics**, set the golfer's **Height** in the profile, and choose **Metric (cm)** or **Imperial (in)**.

### Swing positions

When Onform has found the swing, you can jump straight to **Address**, **Top** and **Impact**. On iPad, tap **Moments**. On iPhone, use the swing position buttons by the timeline.

### Overlays on the video

These are all in the **AI tools** menu. Tap a tool again to hide it.

| Tool | What it shows | Notes |
| ------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Show Club Path On Video** | The path of the club head through the swing. | The club head needs to stay in the picture for the whole swing. On plans that include club tracking. May be slow to create on older devices. |
| **Show Hand Path** | The path of the hands, which helps explain slices and hooks. | |
| **Show Slide & Sway (FO only)** | How far the hips and upper body move toward or away from the target. | Face-on swings only. |
| **Show Swing Plane (DL only)** | The swing plane, drawn from the club path. | Down-the-line swings only. |
| **Show Kinematic Sequence (FO only)** | How fast the pelvis, torso, arms and club rotate, and in what order. See [Read a kinematic sequence](/sports/golf-analysis/beginners-guide-to-kinematic-sequence.md). | Face-on swings only. |
| **Show Pressure** | Pressure mat data. See [Use the Sensor Edge pressure mat with Onform](/sports/launch-monitors-and-golf-hardware/sensor-edge-pressure-mat.md). | Only for videos recorded with a pressure mat. |

On an iPhone held upright, the 2D skeleton is in this menu too, as **Show 2D Skeleton**.

## Reference ranges

Reference ranges color each metric to show how it compares with professional golfers at the same point in the swing:

* **Green:** within the typical professional range.
* **Orange:** a little outside it.
* **Red:** well outside it.

The ranges come from professional men and women hitting a driver or an iron, at address, the top and impact, plus tempo for the whole swing. Red doesn't mean wrong: plenty of good swings sit outside the professional range, so treat the colors as a starting point for a conversation, not a grade.

To turn them on or off, tap **Layout**, then **Edit Metrics**, tap **...** next to **Reference Ranges** and choose **Show Reference Ranges** or **Hide Reference Ranges**. On the same screen, set the golfer's gender and **Club Type** (**Driver** or **Iron**) in the profile, so they're compared with the right group. For how the ranges were made, see [About Onform's 3D model](/sports/golf-analysis/model-card.md).

## Share 3D with your golfer

* **Record a Voice-over.** Everything on screen goes into the Voice-over, including the 3D panel, the metrics and the overlays, so it's the easiest way to walk a golfer through their swing. See [Record a Voice-over](https://github.com/Onform-Inc/onform-docs/tree/main/coaching/analyze/how-to-record-a-voiceover.md).
* **Let your golfers see 3D in Onform.** On Coach Pro, turn on **Allow Your Golfer To View 3D Swing Metrics** when you add a golfer, or later: touch and hold their name, tap **Edit** *name*'**s Details** and turn it on. For a team, tap the three dots next to the team name, tap **Edit Team Profile** and turn on **Allow Your Golfers To View 3D Swing Metrics**.
* **Golfers on Individual Premium** can make and see 3D for their own swings.

## Body metrics glossary

Turns and bends are in degrees. Sway, thrust and lift are distances, measured from where the golfer was at address.

| Metric | What it measures |
| ----------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Torso Turn** | How far the upper body rotates around the spine. |
| **Pelvis Turn** | How far the hips rotate. |

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.onform.com/sports/golf-analysis/using-3d-data-and-visualization.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
