# Use the Garmin R50 with Onform

Connect a Garmin R50 to Onform on iPhone or iPad over Wi-Fi so every shot records its own video with ball, club and distance numbers attached, including putts.

Works on: iPhone and iPad. Launch monitors aren't in the Android or web app.

Connect your Garmin R50 and Onform records every shot for you. When the R50 reads a shot, Onform saves a short video of that swing with the R50's numbers attached, including carry and total distance. Onform talks to the R50 over Wi-Fi, not Bluetooth.

## Before you start

* **A plan that includes launch monitors.** If yours doesn't, you'll see an upgrade message when you choose **Launch-Monitor**. See [onform.com/pricing](https://onform.com/pricing/).
* **A golf workspace.** The golf launch monitors show in the camera when the workspace's sport is golf, or in **Library - All Files** when golf is your sport.
* **Up-to-date R50 software.** On the R50's home screen, tap the menu icon at the bottom right, tap **Settings**, then **Software Update**, and install anything waiting. Onform doesn't appear on the R50 until it's updated.
* **The same Wi-Fi.** Your iPhone or iPad needs to be on the same Wi-Fi network as the R50, or joined to the R50's own hotspot.
* **Local Network on for Onform.** The first time, Onform asks to find devices on your local network: tap **Allow**. To check later, open your device's **Settings**, tap **Onform** and make sure **Local Network** is on.

## Connect the R50

On the R50:

1. On the home screen, swipe to the **Connect** tile and open it.
2. Tap **Onform**. The R50 shows a waiting screen with its hotspot name and password.

On your iPhone or iPad:

3. If your device and the R50 are on the same Wi-Fi network, skip to the next step. If not, open **Settings** > **Wi-Fi**, join the R50's hotspot (its name starts with **ApproachR50**) and enter the password the R50 shows.
4. In Onform, open your golfer's workspace and tap **Library**, or tap **Library - All Files** on the Home screen. Tap the record button to open the camera.
5. Tap the mode name at the top of the camera (for example **Manual**), tap **Launch-Monitor**, then tap **Use Garmin R50**.
6. Wait a few seconds. The status in the camera goes from **Looking for Garmin R50** to **Connecting with R50**, then **Garmin R50 Ready**.

## Hit shots

Set the camera up from any angle, on a tripod or in your hand, with your golfer in frame.

* **Garmin R50 · Place ball to hit**: the R50 doesn't see a ball yet. Put one down in the hitting area.
* **Garmin R50 Ready**: hit when you're ready.
* **Garmin R50 Standby**: a ball sat in the hitting area for a few minutes without being hit, so the R50 turned its cameras off. Tap **Wake** when you're ready to carry on.

Each shot becomes its own short video in the Library and plays back straight away. To stop the playback after each shot, tap the mode name, then **Launch-Monitor** > **Launch-Monitor Settings**, and turn off **Enable Auto-Playback**.

## Choose the club, and putt

Tap the golfer button in the camera and pick the club you're hitting in **Select Club**. Onform tags each video with the club.

To putt, choose **Putter**. Onform switches the R50 to putting mode, and your putts record ball speed, launch angle and launch direction. Pick any other club to go back to full shots. Onform remembers your club, so the R50 is set up the right way the next time you connect.

## See the numbers on the video

Open the video from the Library. The R50's numbers show with the video.

* **Choose which numbers show:** tap the numbers (or tap **Layout**, then **Edit Metrics**). In **Select Metrics**, turn each one on or off, and switch speeds between **MPH** and **KPH**.
* **Hide or show them:** tap **Layout**, then **Hide Metrics** or **Show Metrics**.

Left and right show as **L** and **R**, the same way round as on the R50's screen.

## Add more angles with Multi-Cam

The R50 can start a Multi-Cam recording too. Link your extra iPhones or iPads with **Auxiliary-Cam**, then choose **Launch-Monitor** > **Use Garmin R50** on the main device. See [Record from several angles with Multi-Cam](https://github.com/Onform-Inc/onform-docs/tree/main/coaching/record-and-import/how-to-use-the-multi-cam-feature-to-record-multiple-camera-angles-simultaneously.md).

For Multi-Cam, put every device and the R50 on your own Wi-Fi network rather than the R50's hotspot. The hotspot can stop your devices finding each other.

| It stays on **Looking for Garmin R50** | Check the R50 is still on its waiting screen. If it timed out or went back home, open **Connect** > **Onform** on the R50 again. Make sure your device is on the same Wi-Fi as the R50 (phones sometimes switch back to your home Wi-Fi on their own) and that **Local Network** is on for Onform. |
| An upgrade message when you choose **Launch-Monitor** | Your plan doesn't include launch monitors. See [onform.com/pricing](https://onform.com/pricing/). |

Record in a golf workspace. |
| **Integration Unavailable** | The R50 didn't accept the connection. Update the R50's software and update Onform from the App Store, then try again. If you still see it, email us. |
| You want to use a simulator such as GSPro at the same time | The R50 can't connect to Onform and a simulator at once. That's a Garmin limit for now. |
| Left and right look reversed on older videos | An earlier version of Onform flipped some left/right numbers from the R50. Update Onform. Videos recorded before the update keep the numbers they were saved with. |
| Extra Multi-Cam devices aren't found | Move every device and the R50 from the R50's hotspot to your own Wi-Fi network. |

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.onform.com/sports/launch-monitors-and-golf-hardware/how-to-use-the-garmin-r50-with-onform.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
