# Multi-Cam MAX overview and requirements

Multi-Cam MAX connects up to four fixed high-speed studio cameras to Onform on your iPad. What it is, who it's for and what you need.

Works on: iPad, with a Windows PC for the cameras. A Mac running the Onform app also works. iPhone and the Android and web apps can't connect to fixed cameras.

Multi-Cam MAX turns a hitting bay or studio into a permanent multi-angle setup. Up to four fixed high-speed cameras plug into a Windows PC. A small Onform app on the PC, the **Onform Camera Connector**, sends their video over Wi-Fi to Onform on your iPad. You watch the live picture, change camera settings and record from the iPad, and every swing lands in your athlete's Library with all the angles in sync. You never need to touch the PC during a lesson.

## Who it's for

Multi-Cam MAX is built for teaching facilities: golf studios and academies, multi-bay practice centers, performance labs, and other indoor spaces like batting cages where the cameras stay put. It's a professional setup with dedicated cameras and a PC for each bay, and we help you design it.

Just want two to four angles without extra hardware? Use [Multi-Cam with iPhones and iPads](https://github.com/Onform-Inc/onform-docs/tree/main/coaching/record-and-import/how-to-use-the-multi-cam-feature-to-record-multiple-camera-angles-simultaneously.md) instead. It needs only the devices you already have.

|                | Multi-Cam (iPhones and iPads)  | Multi-Cam MAX (fixed cameras)                    |
| -------------- | ------------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------ |
| Cameras        | 2 to 4 iPhones or iPads        | Up to 4 high-speed studio cameras per bay        |
| Setup | Any space, set up each session | Permanent, cameras mounted in the bay |
| Extra hardware | None | Cameras, lenses, cables and a Windows PC per bay |
| Frame rates | What your devices offer | Up to 200 fps, or up to 500 fps with OptiTrack |
| Who can use it | Whoever brings the devices | Any coach in your organization, from their iPad |

## How it works

* **The PC does the heavy lifting.** The cameras plug into the PC (by USB or network cable, depending on the camera). The Camera Connector runs in the background in the Windows system tray. It has no video screen of its own.
* **The iPad is the controller.** In the Onform camera, you connect to the bay by name (for example "Bay 1"), see a live preview from every camera, set the frame rate, exposure and orientation, and record. The iPad's own camera is off while it's connected.
* **Videos save on the iPad**, in the Library you opened the camera from, as one video with all the angles together. From there they work like any Onform video: slow motion, drawing tools, Compare, Voice-over and sharing.
* **Any coach in your organization can use a bay.** Once a bay is set up, other coaches and staff can connect from their own iPad. One iPad uses a bay at a time.
* **The usual recording modes work**, including Auto-Detect for hands-free swing capture and Launch-Monitor for shot data. See [Record with Multi-Cam MAX](/sports/golf-analysis/using-multi-cam-max.md).

## Supported cameras

Multi-Cam MAX works with OptiTrack Prime Color, FLIR Blackfly S and IDS cameras. Which to choose depends on your budget and your room. Every model supports up to four cameras per bay.

|                       | OptiTrack Prime Color                                                       | FLIR Blackfly S and IDS                                    |
| --------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------- |
| Best for | Training centers, biomechanics labs, academies and high-performance studios | Studios and training facilities looking for the best value |
| Picture | Top image quality, speed and precision | High speed, very reliable |
| Recommended recording | 240 fps at 1920x1080, or 360 fps at 1280x720                                | 200 fps at 1440x1080                                       |
| Highest slow motion   | Up to 500 fps at 960x540                                                    | Up to 200 fps                                              |
| Connection | Network cable with power over Ethernet (needs a network switch) | USB 3, straight into the PC |
| Cable runs | Long, so cameras can sit far from the PC | Limited by USB cable length and the PC's USB ports |
| Shutter | Global shutter: crisp, stop-motion frames | Global shutter: crisp, stop-motion frames |
| Orientation | Portrait or landscape | Portrait or landscape |
| Setup | More involved, and needs a more powerful PC | Simpler, and works with a less powerful PC |

With three or four USB cameras, check that your PC has enough USB 3 ports; you may need a USB hub.

{% hint style="info" %}
High frame rates need plenty of light, and studio cameras are less forgiving in a dim room than an iPhone. Plan for bright, even lighting in the bay.
{% endhint %}

## What you need

### For each bay

* **Cameras, lenses and mounts.** Lens choice depends on how far each camera is from the athlete. We'll help you pick them for your room.
* **A Windows 11 PC** running the Onform Camera Connector. See the PC requirements below.
* **Cables**, and for OptiTrack, a network switch.

### PC requirements

| ---------------- | ----------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Operating system | Windows 11                                      | Windows 11                                                                       |
| Processor | Intel i7 or AMD Ryzen 7, or better | Intel i9 or AMD Ryzen 9, or better |
| Graphics | Nvidia RTX 3060 or better; RTX 4070 recommended | Nvidia RTX 4070 or better |
| Memory           | 16 GB                                           | 16 GB or more                                                                    |
| Storage          | 1 TB SSD recommended                            | 1 TB SSD or more                                                                 |
| Network | Your usual network connection | A 2.5 Gb network port (a USB 3.0 network adapter also works) and a 2.5 Gb switch |

* Keep the graphics card's drivers up to date.
* A laptop works, but keep it plugged into wall power so it runs at full speed and videos reach the iPad quickly.

### Wi-Fi

Use a strong, dedicated Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 7 network for the bays. The PC and the iPad must be on the same network. At high frame rates each video can be hundreds of megabytes, so a busy or weak network slows down every recording. Guest and public networks often block devices from finding each other.

### iPad and Onform

* **An iPad** with the latest version of Onform from the App Store, signed in to an account in your organization. A Mac running the Onform app also works. iPhone can't connect to fixed cameras.
* **Multi-Cam MAX for your organization.** It's set up for each bay, on top of your Onform coaching plan. See [onform.com/pricing](https://onform.com/pricing/) for plans, and contact us for Multi-Cam MAX.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.onform.com/sports/launch-monitors-and-golf-hardware/multi-cam-max-overview.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
