# Quick start: train on your own

Training without a coach? Record a rep in Onform, compare it side by side with another rep, measure lines and angles, and share your progress with a coach when you want feedback.

Works on: iPhone, iPad, Android and web. Recording and Compare need the iPhone, iPad or Android app. The angle tool is on iPhone and iPad.

This page is for athletes using Onform without a coach. By the end you'll have your own rep side by side with another one, so you can see what's actually changing.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Do I need a plan?** Your new account comes with a 14-day free trial with full access. You don't need a card, and you won't be charged when it ends. To keep recording and analyzing after the trial, you need an individual plan. See [onform.com/pricing](https://onform.com/pricing/) and [Who pays for Onform?](https://github.com/Onform-Inc/onform-docs/tree/main/account/plans-and-payments/who-pays-for-onform.md)
{% endhint %}

## 1. Record your first rep

Your videos live in your **Library**. You need two clips to compare, so film two reps: one now and one after you try a change, or today's rep and a clip of your best one.

{% tabs %}
{% tab title="iPhone and iPad" %}

1. On the Home screen, tap **Library - All Files**.
2. Tap the record button to film a rep. To add a video you already have, tap **Import** and choose **Camera Roll** or **Files**.
   {% endtab %}

{% tab title="Android and web" %}

1. On the Home screen, tap **Library - All Files**.
2. On Android, tap the red record button to film a rep. To add a video you already have, tap the menu at the top right, then **Import**.
3. On the web, tap **Upload Files**. You can't record in the web app.
   {% endtab %}
   {% endtabs %}

Film from the same spot each time: side-on for a golf swing or a sprint start, from behind for a pitch or a bowling action. Keep the camera steady and your whole body in the frame.

## 2. Compare yourself side by side

{% tabs %}
{% tab title="iPhone and iPad" %}

1. In your Library, tap **Select** and pick your two videos.
2. Tap **Compare**. On iPhone it shows as an icon in the bar at the bottom.
3. Tap **Link** to play and scrub both videos together, frame by frame. Turn your device sideways for side by side, or upright to stack them. Tap the layout button to lay one over the other.

You can also open a video, tap **Compare**, then tap **Add**, and choose the second video.
{% endtab %}

{% tab title="Android and web" %}

1. In your Library, tap the menu at the top right, then **Select**, and pick your two videos.
2. Tap the Compare icon at the top of the screen.
3. Tap **Link** to play and scrub both videos together.

You can also open a video, tap **Compare** and choose the second video on the **Select Video** screen.

Compare isn't in the web app. Use the Android app, or an iPhone or iPad.
{% endtab %}
{% endtabs %}

That's your first win: your own technique, side by side.

## 3. Draw lines and angles

Pause on the moment that matters, such as impact, foot strike or release, and mark it up.

1. Tap the pencil icon to open the drawing tools.
2. Pick a tool. To change what a tool draws or its color, tap it and choose from the options.
3. With the line tool, draw along your spine, bat or shin, then check the same line on your next rep.
4. On iPhone and iPad, pick the angle tool and drag one line that ends at the joint you want to measure. Onform adds the second arm: drag its free end into place. For a knee bend, drag from ankle to knee, then move the second arm up to the hip. Onform shows the angle.

On the web you can draw lines, circles and boxes, and the angle tool is on iPhone and iPad. For more, see [Measure an angle](https://github.com/Onform-Inc/onform-docs/tree/main/coaching/analyze/using-the-angle-tool.md) and [the drawing tools](https://github.com/Onform-Inc/onform-docs/tree/main/coaching/analyze/finding-and-using-the-drawing-toolbox.md).

## 4. Share your progress with a coach

Onform doesn't have a coach directory, but you can bring a coach in whenever you want feedback.

* **Your coach uses Onform:** ask them to invite you. They'll send a 5-character invite code. Enter it while signed in to this account so your videos stay with you. See [Join your coach with an invite code](https://github.com/Onform-Inc/onform-docs/tree/main/athletes/join-your-coach/join-your-coach-with-an-invite-code.md). Athletes connected to a coach use Onform free; see [Who pays for Onform?](https://github.com/Onform-Inc/onform-docs/tree/main/account/plans-and-payments/who-pays-for-onform.md)
* **Your coach doesn't use Onform:** open a video, tap **Share**, then choose **Share Via Email** or **Share To Other Apps** (on Android, **Share via email** or **Share to other apps**) to send it by text, email or another app.

## You're set up

Make it a habit: film the same rep from the same spot each session, and compare it with your last one.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.onform.com/start-here/diy-athlete.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
